Who are you?
Hello! My name is Anna Cullen and I am (currently) a mom, artist, local newspaper columnist, secondary school teacher, and TRU MEd student. I live in Fort St. John, BC with my partner, my daughter, and my two dogs, Ralph and Fergus.
What kind of work do you do in education, or, if you do not currently work in the field, what you would like to do?
I am currently on maternity leave, but previously I was the English Language Learner Teacher (as well as an English Teacher) at North Peace Secondary School in Fort St. John. Prior, I’ve taught in numerous roles and districts, including several programs that provide adapted and modified learning for students with exceptionalities. When the pandemic began, we had the unique opportunity to move all of our classroom learning to remote learning, where I saw a number of my students struggle with the new learning model. In future, I would like to be able to be a part of creating online teaching strategies and tools made to be accessible for English Language Learners and students with disabilities.
Where would you place your work on the continuum from distance to face-to-face education?
Primarily, I work face to face, but as the role of case manager in schools, often most of my work communicating with teachers, parents, administration, and external support workers is all done through email. In addition, with my eventual and gradual return to work after my maternity leave, I am eager to explore potential distance teaching opportunities where I can return to the work I love while still being able to stay at home with my daughter.
